sorry for beeing a little late with the Dusmania report, so here it comes:

We were voted second best project!

Thank you to everyone who voted for us ! First place went to Iris 2, great job guys, you definitely had a really cool and by far the furthest project, congratulations from our side!

We also saw a lot of nice projects from the overnight contest, awesome job everyone.

1000 commits, Dusmania and more!

We recently completed our 1000th commit!! Yeah OpenAnno has come a really long way and things are looking great!

Milestone 2008.0 completed and a warm welcome!

Hello everybody,

it's time for an OpenAnno status-update once again, a lot has happened since the last post.

We would like to welcome totycro and egore to the team. They have both done great work on OpenAnno already, as you might know if you followed the svn log. egore is a graphics artist and will be creating buildings for OpenAnno, totycro is a programmer who has made some great additions to OpenAnno, which I will present later on. Welcome to the team! We are pleased to have you aboard!

We have also completed the 2008.0 milestone and are making big steps in the direction of the 2008.1 milestone. There will not be an official release, milestone 2008.0 is just an internal goal, we set our self to be finished for the Dusmania.

500 svn commits later

Hello everybody,

today the 500th commit made it into our svn repository. I'll take that as an opportunity to make another short news announcement.

1. The date for the dusmania is now fixed. It has been scheduled to the 19./20. July 2008. We will be attending the Dusmania with a few people, so if you find the time to join the dusmania, we would be happy to meet you there. For more information visit: www.dusmania.de

2. I'd like to thank the guys from Wingware for allowing us (as OpenSource developers) to use the professional version of WingIDE for our work on OpenAnno. If you are into python development, you should take a look at their website and try WingIDE.

Status Update + Job Announcements

Hello everyone,

it's time for a new status report on the OpenAnno development.

Today OpenAnno has been made compatible with the upcoming FIFE datasets branch. We were well prepared and didn't have to make many changes. Please note that OpenAnno will not run with the current FIFE trunk. If you wish to run OpenAnno you will have to checkout the fife datasets branch (/branches/active/datasets). We will post an update as soon as the datasets branch is moved to trunk.

Hi, my name is Thomas!

I am 20 years old and live in Xanten/Germany. On IRC you will usually find me under the name Nihathrael. I use ArchLinux as my main OS, I recommend you try it, if you like tooling arround and aren't afraid of the command line.

My main job at OpenAnno is core programming, so this is what I do most of the time. I usually code in python, but I also know Java und some C++/php/web-standard-stuff.

Maybe it is a bad idea to translate word-by-word german sayings for entry titles. Anyway!

First of all we want to welcome our new team member Nihathrael who will fill the position of python coder we have been desperatly looking for so long. Ok, to tell the truth he is already around for several weeks doing great work on the project, but we led our devblog slide a bit too much. Now to make it official welcome buddy we are all pretty happy to have you here. He is maybe the real reason why there is some content to fill this entry.

Well, we ain't... Yet. But as phiker mentioned in the post below the code monkeys are partially back in action and we can note down some progress. Wohoo... Good job, buddies.

Another step forward are some great improvements and optimizations the FIFE team made for their game engine. Their first release 2008 will hopefully be the milestone in FIFE development I expect it to be.

Although I personally still got the time to get more familiar with Blender and to create simple gfx samples I am pretty busy with hauling bullshit from A to B, from B back to A and then over to C... My boss currently drives me crazy with his epic plans to rearrange his business premises. I would really appreciate to have some time left to hang out with my digital bitch to create some more stuff without all this pain in every fucking limb...

Continuing the development

Yonibear, lars and I had a short real-life meeting from 30th December 2007 to 1st January 2008 at LinuxDonald's place in Berlin. We didn't have too much time to talk or do something useful because we were still exhausted after attending the 24C3, but at least we managed to start coding again. Now we have a new, structured codebase with some basic boilerplate classes we can base our efforts on. Unfortunately, yonibear is still very busy with his job, but I think that we can reach the goal we set: Presenting a very basic release of OpenAnno at the Dusmania.
Now that the base classes exist, we can move on and expand them to actually do something useful, but before that we will have to think of a solid MVC structure. I'll update my proposal after I have discussed the most important points with yoni.

Hello, my name is Dominik. I am 32 years old and married.

We have four children and live in Marburg/Germany. Our home network is based on open source software including Linux.

We have decided to use Ubuntu. Our oldest son is always on search for games and came over www.holarse.de to OpenAnno. He wanted to to play and asked me if I could help him with installing the game. Unfortunatly there is currently still no working version available, what I first read on the boards and was later told when consulting the project's IRC channel.
In the channel I was asked if I am interested in helping out the team with writing the design document for OpenAnno which I willingly accepted.
I hope for the best cooperation and contemporarily look forward to a very good open source project.

Breaking the silence

It has been pretty quiet for a while now. And again we reached a point where it looked like the whole project would fall asleep. But... I did not!

Although most of the team mentioned in the wiki is pretty inactive there is still something going on. Although LinuxDonald went inactive as well what means no more work on techdemo for me there are still svn updates to the demo. I have absolutly no idea why he went officially inactive and is still working... Anyways I'm pretty happy he is and makes some progress with the techdemo. A small step is better than no step.

I have been working on the design document again lately after phiker started some work on the behaviour of streets and consequently got me back to the wiki. The design document looks much more like what it is meant to be now. It moves me optimistic to see more links in the index filled than being empty.

Well, today or rather tonight I was wasting some of my unblievable precious time adding some stuff to the wiki and editing some articles. Nothing really exciting, but at least the work is going on step by step. It's still a shitload to do and most of the team is kinda busy with other stuff or unfortunatly pretty new to the project and not involved enough in the results of the former discussion to push something forward.

LinuxDonald is currently bitching around with the FIFEngine trying to get an instructive techdemo running featuring some OA related stuff. It's still more in development, but he's on a pretty good way getting something nice done there.

I would like to take this chance to speak out a big 'THANK YOU!' to the FIFE devs for being so helpful whenever we have a question or problem. Special tanks to the project manager of FIFE - namely mvBarracuda - for providing us a lot of support to let us have a good restart with our project.

Test entry - or - a concept of a residental tent

This image shows a preview or rather a concept of a residental tent for OA. Maybe this will help other developers to get a rough idea of the level of detail and quality I would really appreciate for OA's ingame graphics. The gras an the ground would normally be part of a ground tile and not part of the building itself, but it would look kinda boring without it.
